Tanzania entry requirements: A quick overview

Let’s be real—sorting out travel documents is nobody’s idea of a good time. But if Tanzania is on your list (and it should be), a little prep goes a long way. Whether you’re planning to summit Kilimanjaro, spot lions in the Serengeti, or relax in Zanzibar, knowing the visa requirements for Tanzania will make everything smoother.

Here’s the short version: most travellers need a visa, but getting one is easier than you’d think.

Visa requirements for Tanzania: Who actually needs a visa?

In most cases, you do.

Tanzania isn’t big on visa-free access. Unless you're from a small group of countries (mostly in East Africa and parts of the Caribbean), a visa is required. That includes travellers from the United States, India, the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe.

So if you're Googling Tanzania visa requirements for US citizens or Tanzania visa requirements for European citizens, you're not alone—and you're in the right place.

Tanzania visa requirements for US citizens

If you’re a U.S. passport holder, a visa is required. You have two options: get one on arrival or apply online in advance. Here’s what that actually looks like:

  • Type: Single-entry (tourist) or multiple-entry (usually for frequent visitors or business)
  • Validity: 90 days for a single entry
  • Fee: $100 USD (flat rate, even for just one visit)
  • Accepted reasons: Tourism, business, short-term study, family visits, volunteering
  • Best method: Online eVisa—faster, cleaner, no airport surprises

You can get your visa when you land, but unless you like waiting in immigration lines, go with the eVisa. It’s easy and saves time.

Tanzania's visa requirements for UK and European citizens

If you're coming from the UK or anywhere in Europe, you'll need a visa to get into Tanzania. Luckily, it’s pretty painless. Here’s the lowdown:

  • Visa type: Single-entry tourist visa
  • Valid for: Up to 90 days
  • Cost: Around £40
  • How to apply: Best option is online at the official Tanzania eVisa site

What you’ll need to apply:

  • A passport that’s valid for at least 6 months
  • Your travel dates and a basic itinerary
  • A digital passport photo
  • Proof of accommodation and return or onward travel
  • You might be asked to show you’ve got enough money for your trip (not always, but it’s smart to be ready)

Heads up: If you’re going with the eVisa, apply at least 10 days before your trip. It’s usually quick, but things can take a little longer sometimes.

If you’re heading to Zanzibar, read this

Zanzibar has its own rules, and from October 1, 2024, everyone visiting has to pay for mandatory travel insurance from the local authorities. Even if you’ve already got your own policy.

  • Cost: $44 USD (about £34)
  • What it covers: Health issues, accidents, emergency evacuation, lost baggage, and passport mishaps
  • Where to get it: You can buy it online from September 1, 2024, at Visit Zanzibar

It’s a separate payment from your visa, but it’s non-negotiable — so make sure you tick that box before you land.

How to apply for a Tanzanian visa online (eVisa)

The Tanzania eVisa system is the simplest route for most travellers. It’s official, secure, and works for over 150 countries—including the U.S. and India.

What to do

  1. Head to visa.immigration.go.tz
  2. Fill out the application with your personal info, travel dates, and passport details
  3. Upload:
  • Passport bio page (must be valid at least 6 months)
  • Passport-sized photo
  • Flight confirmation or itinerary

4. Pay:

  • $100 USD for U.S. citizens
  • $50 USD (£40) for U.K or European citizens.

5. Wait:

  • Processing takes up to 10 business days

6. Download and print the approval letter—yes, you’ll need a hard copy

Where is the eVisa accepted?

It works at all major points of entry:

  • Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO
  • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar
  • Border crossings like Namanga (Kenya) and Tunduma (Zambia)

Other Tanzania entry requirements you should know

Along with your visa, there are a few more things to keep in mind when entering Tanzania:

  • Passport validity: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates
  • Yellow fever certificate: Required if you’re arriving from or transiting through a high-risk country (not the U.S. but layovers matter)
  • Onward/return ticket: Occasionally checked at immigration
  • Printed visa approval: Don’t rely on just your phone—paper copies are still king

Can you get a visa on arrival in Tanzania?

You can — but it’s not always the smoothest way in.

Tanzania does offer visas on arrival for most nationalities at major airports and border posts. That includes Kilimanjaro International, Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam, and several land crossings. But there’s a trade-off: you might be waiting in line for hours, especially if you land at a busy time.

Think of it a backup plan. It works, but it’s not the most efficient.

What you’ll need for visa on arrival

  • A passport that’s valid for at least six more months
  • A completed application form (you’ll fill this out when you land)
  • $100 USD in cash — bring small, clean bills
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Details of your accommodation or tour booking

If you’re travelling with children, each one needs their own visa. Immigration may also ask for a birth certificate, particularly if the child isn’t travelling with both parents.

Going to Zanzibar? Here’s what to know

Zanzibar’s semi-autonomous status sometimes confuses travellers. The good news: you don’t need a separate visa.

Once you have a valid Tanzania visa, you’re good to go. Whether you're heading straight for the beach, exploring Stone Town, or hopping between islands, your visa covers the whole archipelago.

Just know that flights between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar include a domestic immigration check. It’s usually quick, but they’ll want to see your documents again—passport, visa approval, maybe your entry stamp. Keep them handy.

Other types of visas for Tanzania

If you’re not doing a typical round-trip visit, Tanzania offers other visa types to suit different travel plans.

Multiple-entry visa

  • This one’s only for U.S. citizens. It’s valid for a full year and lets you enter and leave Tanzania as many times as you like, with stays of up to 90 days each time.
  • Cost: $100 USD
  • Useful if you’re combining Tanzania with trips to Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda—or planning multiple safaris.

Transit visa

  • Just passing through? This visa covers up to 7 days in Tanzania, as long as you’re on your way to another destination.
  • Cost: $30 USD
  • You’ll need to show a confirmed onward ticket when you apply.

Business visa

  • This one’s for travellers attending meetings, workshops, or short-term assignments.
  • It’s valid for up to 90 days.
  • Fees depend on your nationality and the type of work you’ll be doing.
  • Important: this visa doesn’t allow full-time work or long-term volunteering. If that’s your plan, check directly with the Tanzania Immigration Department about the correct permits.

Pro tips for a smooth visa experience

Tanzania’s wild landscapes and white-sand beaches are more than worth the paperwork — but getting your visa squared away early can make a huge difference.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning for another safari, here's how to glide through the visa requirements for Tanzania with zero drama.

1. Apply early — and we mean early

Tanzania’s eVisa system is efficient most of the time. But during peak travel months — especially June to October and December through January — things can bottleneck.

If you’re travelling during those windows, apply for your visa at least 3–4 weeks in advance. It can take up to 10 business days for approval, and delays do happen, especially if your application isn’t perfect the first time.

2. Check (and re-check) your documents

Many eVisa applications get rejected for one reason: bad uploads. Scan everything in full colour, make sure it's crystal clear, and save your files in standard formats like PDF or JPEG. You’ll need:

  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • A passport-style photo
  • A copy of your return or onward ticket
  • Details of your hotel or tour (confirmation email works)

If you're applying for a Tanzania visa as a European/U.K citizen, your application is similar, but the fee is around $50 USD ($100 for multiple-entry). For US citizens, the visa fee is $100 USD, even for single entry — this also applies to the multiple-entry visa.

3. Avoid sketchy third-party websites

Plenty of unofficial sites claim to process your Tanzania visa — and they usually charge more (or worse, steal your personal info).

There’s only one official site to use: visa.immigration.go.tz. Bookmark it, triple-check it, and don’t click ads that pretend to be it.

4. Print your eVisa approval letter

Even though it's technically an eVisa, immigration officers at the airport will ask to see a printed copy of your approval letter. Don’t rely on screenshots or Wi-Fi access when you land — keep a hard copy in your carry-on.

Final checklist before you fly

A quick reminder of the Tanzania entry requirements so nothing catches you off guard:

  • U.S. citizens need a visa and must pay $100 USD, regardless of whether it's single or multiple entry
  • Tanzania visa requirements for UK or European citizens include a $50 USD single-entry fee
  • Apply through the official eVisa site only
  • Visa on arrival is available for many nationalities, but expect long lines and limited staff
  • The multiple-entry visa is only available to U.S. passport holders
  • You must show a Yellow Fever certificate if you're entering from or transiting through a high-risk country
  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past your date of arrival
