Every so often someone books a Kilimanjaro climb with us and asks whether they should rent an altitude tent beforehand, one of the setups that goes over your bed at home and drops the oxygen level in the air you breathe while you sleep, supposedly pre-acclimatising you before you've even left for Tanzania. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is more nuanced than a flat yes or no, so here's what the actual research says, not what the companies selling them say.
What these tents actually do
A hypoxic (or altitude) tent doesn't do what people often assume. It doesn't lower the air pressure the way a real mountain does. Instead, a nitrogen generator pumps extra nitrogen in and thins out the oxygen percentage inside a sealed tent over your bed, at completely normal sea-level pressure. In physiology terms that's called normobaric hypoxia, and it's properly different from what happens on an actual mountain, which is hypobaric hypoxia: lower pressure, lower oxygen, at altitude.
Whether that difference matters is a real, ongoing scientific argument, not something I'm going to pretend is fully settled. Researchers have gone back and forth on it directly in medical journals. What does seem to hold up under scrutiny is that sleeping in a normobaric tent doesn't trigger the same rise in red blood cell mass that living at real altitude does, which is one of the body's main long-term adaptations to thin air. Some of the faster adjustments, mainly to breathing rate, do seem to happen either way. So unnatural is a fair word for it. Does nothing at all isn't, quite. It's a partial, biologically distinct stand-in for the real thing, not a full substitute.
What the actual trials found
The most relevant study, run specifically to test whether sleeping in moderate hypoxia at home prevents altitude sickness, is worth knowing about because of how it actually went. The nitrogen generators struggled to hit the target altitude for a lot of participants in warm weather, and a faulty valve accidentally let nitrogen leak into two tents that were meant to be the placebo group. Once the researchers accounted for all of that and looked at everyone who started the trial, 34% of the tent group got altitude sickness anyway, against 50% in the control group, a difference that didn't reach statistical significance. Only a smaller subgroup who happened to actually reach the target altitude showed a real benefit. An earlier trial, using a shorter one-week protocol, found no meaningful effect on sickness or performance at all.
That's the evidence the Wilderness Medical Society weighed when it wrote its most recent guidelines on altitude illness. Their conclusion is direct: hypoxic tents shouldn't be relied on to help you acclimatise, prevent altitude sickness, or improve your odds of summiting, and they rate that a strong recommendation, not a mild suggestion. They do note a theoretical benefit if someone used one for more than 8 hours a night for over 3 weeks straight, but even that hasn't actually been tested properly. I'd want to see real evidence before recommending anyone spend a month sleeping through nitrogen fumes on a maybe.
Why we'd rather you spent the time on your itinerary instead
Here's the part Chris (Head of Follow Alice in Tanzania - meet Chris here) cares about more than the tent debate itself: there's much better evidence behind something you already have if you're climbing with us. A real study on staged ascent, spending several days at a moderate altitude before pushing higher, showed a genuine drop in the severity of altitude sickness. That's exactly the mechanism behind why we build our routes around 8 or 9 days rather than 5 or 6: real days at real altitude, in the actual thin air your body will be dealing with on summit night, doing the specific work of adjusting that a tent in your bedroom can only partly imitate.

What it would actually cost you
If you're still tempted, it's worth knowing the real numbers. Renting a tent setup typically runs somewhere in the $150 to $175 a week range, so a month of prep before your trip can easily land at $600 to $700, and buying a generator outright starts well above $3,000. On top of the cost, the tents are really disruptive to sleep in practice: the generators run warm and audibly, heat and humidity build up inside a sealed tent, and several nights of interrupted sleep in the weeks before a demanding trek isn't nothing. They're also not recommended if you have any cardiopulmonary condition, sleep apnoea, or are pregnant.
Where they might actually make sense
I don't want to overstate the case against these either. If someone's heading to an 8,000-metre peak on a really compressed schedule with no time for real staged acclimatisation on the mountain itself, or is an elite athlete training specifically for performance at altitude, a hypoxic tent has a real, if still imperfect, role to play. That's just not the situation almost anyone climbing Kilimanjaro with us is in. You've already got the days on the mountain that the research says actually work.
What I'd actually tell you
If you're deciding between spending a few hundred dollars and several disrupted weeks on a tent, or trusting the itinerary that's already built around giving your body real time to adjust, I'd trust the itinerary. Save the money for proper training instead, or just put it toward the trip. If you're ever unsure whether something being marketed to you as an altitude aid, a tent, a chamber, a canister of oxygen, is actually worth it, that's exactly the kind of question our team is happy to talk through honestly before you spend the money.
