In the world of high-altitude trekking, Follow Alice has built its reputation on a single principle, and that is prioritising their clients' safety and summit success over everything else, especially when it comes to speed or sales. Across their operations in Tanzania, Peru, Bhutan, Iceland, and Nepal, the company has implemented a thorough approach to ensure every expedition meets the highest standards for the safety of their clients.

Prioritising client safety and summit success

Follow Alice’s approach begins with the principle that reaching the summit should never compromise safety. Expeditions are designed to help trekkers acclimatise safely and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Guides keep a close eye on everyone’s health, spotting early signs of trouble and acting immediately if needed.

Looking after travellers’ health is a core part of how this organisation runs every expedition. Every guide completes a Wilderness First Responder certification, recognised internationally for wilderness medical expertise. This 70–80 hour program trains staff in patient assessment, trauma management, environmental illness response, and emergency evacuation. Guides also participate in practical drills and scenario-based simulations to ensure readiness in remote locations.

Every expedition carries well-stocked first-aid kits, oxygen, and reliable ways to communicate. Guides always put travellers’ health first, making decisions based on wellbeing rather than rushing to the summit, which is a reflection of Follow Alice’s commitment to thoughtful, client-focused trekking.

Follow Alice relies on local leaders for safe summits

At the heart of every Follow Alice trek is the local guides. High-altitude success requires more than medical training; it also demands knowledge of the terrain, weather patterns, and local conditions. Follow Alice recruits guides based on long-term relationships and wide regional experience. In Tanzania, guides are recruited from communities surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro, ensuring a lifetime of personal familiarity with the mountain. Similar practices are applied in Peru and Nepal, where guides’ understanding of the Andes and Himalayan terrain helps them make decisions on daily route adjustments, client pacing, and altitude management.

This selection process ensures expeditions are led by staff who can anticipate and respond to challenges that arise in remote environments. Guides’ insight into trail conditions, seasonal weather, and cultural factors allows for safer, more predictable treks, improving the probability of clients successfully reaching the summit. Support staff, including porters and assistant guides, also undergo training aligned with these standards. By working closely together, the guides and staff make sure every trek runs smoothly, and every traveller stays safe.

Safety goes hand in hand with looking after the environment. Guides and staff follow low-impact practices to protect the trails and surrounding ecosystems, keeping the mountains healthy for future trekkers. Responsible trail management also helps reduce hazards like unstable paths or overcrowded sections. Their experience means every journey is led by someone who can spot risks and respond immediately if a climber struggles, giving travellers the best chance of reaching the summit safely.

Follow Alice invests in training and assessments

Another great quality is that Follow Alice continues to strengthen safety standards through ongoing training and practical experience on the mountain. Guides regularly participate in refresher training and safety exercises to keep their emergency response skills sharp. This includes medical training such as the internationally recognised Wilderness First Responder certification, which prepares guides to manage medical situations in remote environments.

Experience from adventure trips is shared between Follow Alice teams in all our destinations. What guides learn on the trail helps them improve their pacing on treks, manage acclimatisation, and respond to emergencies. This shared knowledge helps make treks safer and supports better summit success for clients. At Follow Alice, every expedition is built on preparation, expertise, and safety first.
