Trips/Everest Base Camp Trek

14 days

Embark on the classic Everest Base Camp trek, visiting iconic villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche. After reaching the famous base camp, trek back via a partly different, quieter route so as to enjoy fresh landscapes and visit out-of-the-way settlements like Khumjung Village.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu

Everyone arrives in Kathmandu and gathers together at the hotel in the city's lively Thamel district. If you arrive early enough, there's time to explore the streets and alleys and also pop into any of the many trekking shops if necessary. In the evening, we all meet up for dinner, which is a great way to get to know your fellow trekkers. Our trek guide also provides a detailed briefing on the upcoming adventure and answers any lingering questions.

Day 2: Fly to Lukla then trek to Phakding (3-4 hr)

We catch an early flight to Lukla (2,860 m), the gateway to the EBC trek. The incredible views of the Himalayas on this short flight are spellbinding! Once landed, it's time to hoist on backpacks, lengthen those poles, and get started right away with Nepal's most famous trek. It's a relatively flat hike today of just 7.8 km through a leafy valley and pretty Sherpa settlements to reach the riverside village of Phakding (2,610 m), where we overnight.

Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar (6 hr)

Today's 11.3 km trail meanders through evergreen forest alongside the utterly picturesque river Dudh Kosi. It also leads you over some high suspension bridges festooned with prayer flags. The final stretch of today's hike is a challenging climb up to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), the regional hub of the Khumbu region. You spend the night in this bustling, mountainside town, where there's the chance to stock up on supplies and enjoy dinner at one of many charming restaurants.

Day 4: Trek to Pangboche (7-8 hr)

The scenery on today's 13.5 km hike is just sublime, and changes dramatically too. En route we pass through Tengboche, whose working monastery is the biggest in the region and a visual gem, so we stop and pay our respects with a quick visit. Then it's time to push on to Pangboche further up the valley. A handful of hardy trees gather around Pangboche (3,985 m), and there's another historic monastery we can visit.

Day 5: Trek to Dingboche (4 hr)

Today, we continue our adventure by trekking 6.9 km and ascending well above the tree line to reach the valley floor village of Dingboche (4,410 m). We're in a truly remote part of the Himalayas here, and the painted buildings, colourful prayer flags and yellow-topped stupa offer a warm yet stark contrast to the hardy scrub that surrounds the village before giving way to soaring, snow-encrusted peaks on either side.

Day 6: Acclimatisation day in Dingboche

We take a day off from trekking to allow your body to rest and so better acclimatise to the high altitude. That said, those who feel up to it can enjoy a roundtrip day hike to see more of the austere and arresting scenery of the area. Take this day to acclimatise and immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings. Be sure to keep your eyes open for wildlife while resting in Pangbboche. If you're lucky you might see the likes of musk deer, Himalayan tahrs, golden eagles, Tibetan snowcocks and shore larks.

Day 7: Trek to Lobuche (6 hr)

On today's 12 km trek to Lobuche (6,119 m), we pass by memorials honouring climbers who have perished on nearby peaks; each one offers a poignant reminder of the unforgiving nature of the region. If you arrive in Lobuche early enough and have some spare energy, why not hike to the Italian Pyramid, which is just 1 km away? This research centre is shaped like an Egyptian pyramid and that fact, together with its glass exterior, makes it look a little like an alien deposit.

Day 8: Trek to Everest Base Camp (7-8 hr)

It's the big day! And a long one too, even though 11.2 km might not sound too bad. We start early as the air is thin and every kilometre on the path to base camp is more taxing than usual. But once the legwork is done, we're rewarded with that incredible moment of entering Everest Base Camp and appreciating the iconic site, with its riot of prayer flags, as well as the majestic Khumbu Icefall and the dizzyingly high peaks that soar up around us. Once done celebrating, we turn around and head to the small settlement of Gorakshep for the night.

Day 9: Climb Kala Patthar then trek to Pheriche (6 hr)

We rise early to tackle the challenging but supremely rewarding hike up Kala Patthar (5,644 m), the so-called 'Black Rock'. It's from here that we get to feast our eyes on Mt Everest itself, hopefully with the rising sun turning it a luminous orangey pink. With Everest emblazoned in the mind's eye, it's time to trek to the quiet village of Pheriche (4,371 m), which sits alongside the Tsola River, covering 14.4 km in total by day's end.

Day 10: Trek to Khumjung Village (9 hr)

We trek today for 17 km to the Sherpa farming community of Khumjung Village (3,790 m) in the Green Valley, thus dubbed because most of the roofs are green. It's during today's trek that we deviate from our outbound path and venture onto a fresh trail! Note that the village's 400-year-old Khumjung Monastery is a must-see. And Everest Bakery Cafรฉ is a must-visit! (Top tip: try the apple pie.) There's also a beautiful mani wall to visit, which is a wall made with stones inscribed or painted with Buddhist mantras.

Day 11: Trek to Monjo (3-4 hr)

Today's trek of 7.9 km feels more like a hop and a skip as we tackle the largely downhill hike from Khumjung to Monjo (2,835 m), also spelled Manjo, our lungs nearing bursting point with what now feels like excessively oxygenated air! The ever-greener scenery is incredibly pretty, and we spend much of the day walking along forest paths, crossing a handful of suspension bridges, and enjoying the background soundtrack of the Dudh Kosi.

Day 12: Trek to Lukla (3-4 hr)

We conclude our unforgettable trek with a 12.8 km return to Lukla, hiking the same stretch of trail we traversed on Day 1 of the trek, which now feels so long ago! We have the afternoon to rest in Lukla before our flight back to Kathmandu tomorrow. There's plenty of time to head out for drinks and dinner together to celebrate the milestone achievement of having trekked to Everest Base Camp and back!

Day 13: Fly to Kathmandu

This morning we enjoy the scenic flight back to Kathmandu, after which there's the rest of the day to spend as we wish. Explore historical Kathmandu? Shop for souvenirs in the local market? Hot stone massage? Indulge in the longest bath of your life? Anything is possible!

Day 14: Departure day

As our adventure in Nepal draws to a close, enjoy a seamless transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight. We have no doubt that the incredible experiences and memories forged during this trekking experience will stay with you long after you touch down back home.
