Detailed Itinerary

Climb Lobuche East Peak

Day 1: Arrival day in Kathmandu

Welcome to Nepal! You're met at the airport by your guide and driven to the Thamel district of Kathmandu to check into your boutique hotel. If there's time before dinner, we recommend you step out of the hotel and into the streets to explore and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this renowned city. Later, everyone gathers together for a welcome dinner. Your guide will also conduct gear checks at this time.

Day 2: Fly to Lukla, trek to Phakding (3-4 hr)

This morning you catch an exhilarating and incredibly scenic flight to the mountainside town of Lukla (2,860 m). Upon landing, you simply hoist up your backpack and start the Everest Base Camp trek! Today's trail includes inclines and declines, and you actually overnight at a slightly lower elevation in the picturesque riverside village of Phakding (2,610 m). You enjoy your first night in a teahouse (lodge), where you're lulled to sleep by the sound of the Dudh Kosi river.

Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar (6-7 hr)

You ascend nearly a vertical kilometre today to reach the steep mountainside town of Namche Bazaar (3,440 m). The route takes you through pine forest, and you cross high suspension bridges, including the famous Hilary Suspension Bridge. The final stretch up to Namche Bazaar is steep and taxing, but the views from Namche are ample reward!

Day 4: Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar

Today is your first rest day. You might like to explore the lively streets of Namche Bazaar and pop into its Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Alternatively, there are various rewarding day hikes you can do to nearby Sherpa villages like Thame, Khumjung and Khunde. You could also head to the famous Everest View Hotel, the world's highest hotel, for a drink or bite to eat with an unparalleled view!

Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (5-6 hr)

Today you start trekking again, heading further up the Dudh Kosi valley to reach the village of Tengboche (3,870 m). The views on the day's hike of Lhotse, Everest and Ama Dablam are unforgettable. Once you've settled into your teahouse, we recommend visiting Tengboche Monastery, the largest gompa (Tibetan Buddhist fortification) in the Khumbu region. It's a working monastery but visitors are welcomed, so the experience offers an important insight into the traditional religion of the Sherpas.

Day 6: Trek to Dingboche (5-6 hr)

Today you ascend the Imja Khola valley, walking through woods and enjoying increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Ama Dablam and Island Peak in particular are breathtaking. You also pass by Panboche, whose monastery is the oldest in the region. You overnight in Dingboche (4,360 m), a flat, valley-floor village that's home to a few farms and businesses servicing the trekking trade.

Day 7: Acclimatisation day in Dingboche

Today is a rest day, as the high altitude must be respected. For those who feel up to it, we recommend taking an acclimatisation hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,100 m) as the view from here of the surrounding peaks is sublime. Case in point, you can see, among others, the peaks of Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Makalu (8,485 meters), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Pumori (7,161 m) and Ama Dablam (6,812 m).

Day 8: Trek to Lobuche (5-6 hr)

You head higher and deeper into the mountains today, and the environment accordingly grows more barren and forbidding while the settlements become increasingly sparse and rudimentary. You can expect a rocky and steep ascent near the end of the day's climb before reaching the village Lobuche (4,950 m) for the night.

Day 9: Trek to Lobuche Base Camp (2-3 hr)

Having thus far walked alongside the many trekkers en route to Everest Base Camp, it's time now to veer off onto a much quieter path as you take on the short hike to Lobuche Base Camp (4,950 m). Once there, the name of the game is rest. But be sure to keep your eyes open, as always, for the wildlife of the region, especially now that you're away from the crowds. You might be fortunate enough to spot Himalayan monals (pheasants), snowcocks, Himalayan tahrs (goat-like animals) and bharals (blue sheep).

Day 10: Training and acclimatisation at Lobuche Base Camp

Today you spend time at base camp learning the mountaineering skills necessary for climbing Lobuche East Peak. Specifically, you're taught pick ice techniques, how to walk in crampons, how to navigate walking when attached to a rope, and how to safely cross crevasses. Later in the day you might like to go for a short hike to further acclimatise before your summit push tomorrow.

Day 11: Summit push to Lobuche East Peak (8-10 hr)

Starting a little after midnight, you head off on in the dark for you Lobuche East Peak (6,119 m) summit push! It's a challenging climb, and requires you to navigate rocky, narrow and icy sections. But this all serves to taste the sense of accomplishment even sweeter when you stand atop the summit and behold possibly the most mesmerising 360-degree views of your life! You must then focus again as you tackle the descent back to base camp.

Day 12: Trek to Everest Base Camp (8-9 hr)

It's time to head to Everest Base Camp! The iconic site contains a riot of colourful prayer flags both in and out of climbing season. Of course those who visit in springtime can enjoy the buzz of an active base camp. But no matter when you arrive, you can enjoy the majestic Khumbu Icefall and also revel in the heady history of the site. After posing by the famous EBC rock, you turn around and head to the small settlement of Gorakshep (5,164 m) for the night.

Day 13: Trek to Pheriche (5-6 hr)

Today you descend in elevation, with your end goal being the village of Pheriche (4,371 m), which sits alongside the Tsola River. Pheriche sits a little way off the main Everest Base Camp trek route, and so is a quieter village. It's surrounded by some glorious peaks, including Taboche (also known as Tawache), Cholatse, Lobuche East, Lobuche West and Ama Dablam.

Day 14:  Trek to Namche Bazaar (5-6 hr)

Today's trek takes you back onto the classic Everest Base Camp trek route which you hiked on the outward journey up until Lobuche. Ama Dablam presides over the trail, which turns from one through sparse, hardy alpine vegetation to one through evergreen trees. After the past two weeks of trekking, your overnight destination of Namche Bazaar feels a bit like a bustling metropolis.

Day 15: Trek to Lukla (6-7 hr)

You hike the same stretch of trail you traversed on Day 1 of your trek, which now feels so long ago! You have the afternoon to rest in Lukla before the flight back to Kathmandu tomorrow. That means there's plenty of time to head out for drinks and dinner together to celebrate the milestone achievement of having summited Lobuche East Peak and trekked to Everest Base Camp and back.

Day 16: Fly back to Kathmandu

This morning, weather permitting, you embark on the short but breathtaking flight back to Kathmandu. You then head to your boutique hotel in Thamel. You might like to just relax and visit a spa or laze in the hotel's swimming pool. However, if you're keen to sightsee, there's so much on offer. In fact, Kathmandu Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Swayambhunath stupa (or 'Monkey Temple'), Boudhanath stupa, and Changunarayan temple.

It's farewell time. Your guide drives you to the airport and bids you farewell. We feel confident that you're heading home with indelible memories of your time spent among the mountain gods of Nepal.
